Mallory Nobles

Mallory (she/her) is the Associate Director of the Data Science & Social Systems program.  Read her story of combining data science and public service, and why she is so excited to launch the major, kick off classes and build a community of Data Science students.   

Throughout her career, Mallory has worked to use math and data science to improve public policy and address societal challenges. Most recently, as Technical Staff at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, Mallory partnered with government organizations to develop AI systems that support national security. As a doctoral student at Carnegie Mellon University, she used machine learning and natural language processing to better detect emerging outbreaks of rare disease in emergency room records. In graduate school, she also founded and led an outreach program to teach middle school girls how to code. Earlier in her career, Mallory worked at the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, D.C. 

Mallory has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Davidson College, a master’s degree in operations research from Georgia Tech, and a PhD in information systems from Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy. Outside of work, Mallory can be found on a hiking trail or walking her golden retriever, Hopper, who is named after the computer science pioneer Grace Hopper.
