Data Science B.S. Honors Proposal
The Data Science B.S. with Honors provides students with an opportunity to deepen their knowledge of data science and its applications, engaging in advanced learning, independent studies and research.
Students who would like to pursue the honors program must create an Honors Proposal and have it approved by (a) their faculty advisor, (b) their research advisor, and (c) the program. Proposals are due by the final study list deadline two quarters prior to the expected degree conferral quarter.
Instructions for Honors Proposal
Name your concentration
Choose your concentration and give it a concise name.
Write a description of your concentration
Consider what led you to it, what interests you about it (especially as it relates to data science), and what you hope to achieve by focusing on it during your honors experience. (300-500 words)
Choose the classes you want to take for the Honors Program
- The classes should consider different angles and perspectives. Together, they should form a well-rounded examination of the concentration.
- The total of the classes must be at least 15 units.
- These should be upper-level courses.
- Six of these units should come from independent work, such as a small group seminar (e.g. BIODS 290 or STATS 319), a research-based course, or an independent reading/research course (e.g. DATASCI 199).
- For each course, please include:
- The number and title of the course
- Description from ExploreCourses
- Number of units
- Link to course syllabus
- Rational: How would this course provide an important perspective on your concentration, and how would this course enable you to pursue your interests as a data scientist?
Consult with your Data Science faculty advisor
Ask for their input, finalize your plan, and obtain their approval.
Find a Research Advisor
Find a research advisor for the independent work you plan to do as part of your Honors program. Have a conversation with them and get their approval.
